I never wanted to work in Sales, nor did I ever wanted to be known as a Salesperson. Over the years, I constantly heard of Sales people be referred to as sneaky, unethical or downright liars. My experience buying supported this connotation, with fond memories of being backed into a corner through guilt and obligation to purchase. My first job after graduating from Year 12 was a retail assistant at a consumer electronics retail store that primarily focussed on selling private label electronics and componentry.
Here, I was first introduced to the idea of selling, and remember watching video after video of learning to sell as part of my training for the job. It was in this job, where I experienced first-hand the sheer brutality of customer’s attitude towards Sales, the lack of trust, the dis-interest, or the sheer coldness projected towards me. Needless to say, I only lasted 6 months and made a commitment that I would never work in Sales again.
20 years on, and I have grown wiser and more curious. I held true to my commitment, and worked in all aspects of business except Sales, but an inner itch kept surfacing, an inner desire to understand this prejudice that was somewhat unsubstantiated. I returned to Sales and unsurprisingly the cultural attitude remained the same.
However, this time I was 20 years more mature and with curious desire to do something about it.
